Prisoner asks for new wardrobe after weight gain

The reputation of Swedish prison food has been given a boost, after a prisoner went up so much in weight during his stay in a Swedish prison cell that his clothes no longer fitted him when he was released.

The ex-convict, 40, appealed to the social services on Gotland for a budget to buy a new wardrobe. In his submission, he said he wanted to look good for his visits to probation officers.

When the social services said no, he appealed to the Gotland District Administrative Court. But the man was denied his appeal by the court, which said that his ordinary social benefits should be sufficient for buying new clothes, according to local newspaper Gotlands Allehanda.

The paper did not reveal which prison the man had been detained in.
