Swedes are leaving the country at a rate not seen since the end of the nineteenth century, with 45,000 people leaving the country last year.

Half of those leaving Sweden in 2006 had themselves been immigrants to Sweden. In these cases, many were returning home due to improved conditions in their homelands, reports Svenska Dagbladet.

The other groups leaving Sweden in large numbers are the middle and upper classes, the paper reports. Most of these leave Sweden for major international cities such as London and New York, with high-wage Norway another popular destination.

Younger emigrants often work in bars or shops, while older Swedes are tempted by the banking sector. Most Swedes living abroad return to Sweden , according to Professor Bo Malmberg of Stockholm University.

"This means we get an inflow of new ideas. Those who come home bring a contact network and experience," he told Svenska Dagbladet.
