Half of Swedes oppose selling state companies

Nearly half of all Swedes don't want to privatize the country's state-owned companies.

Only a third, 28 percent, think the government's privatization programme is a good thing, while 49 percent oppose the plans. Some 33 percent of Swedes have not taken a position, according to a poll by Sifo carried out for Svenska Dagbladet.

The poll shows a strengthening of opposition to the privatization plans. At the end of February a similar poll put those in favour at 33 percent, with 44 percent against.

The pollsters interviewed 1,000 people during the second week in June. Sweden's parliament, the Riksdag, is due to vote on privatization plans on Wednesday.

The government plans to sell its shares in phone company TeliaSonera, Nordea bank, stock exchange company OMX, drinks maker Vin & Sprit, real estate company Vasakronan and mortgage lender SBAB.
