Major newspapers to lose press subsidies

Proposed changes to the Swedish press subsidy system may result in a serious loss of income for major newspapers such as Svenska Dagbladet and Skånska Dagbladet.

The Department of Culture has ironed out a range of new proposals with the government and is sending a delegation to Brussels next week to run the amendments by the EU Commission.

"There will be certain adjustments. Control mechanisms will be introduced and support will be provided at a more local level. This is in accordance with opinions expressed by the Commission during previous discussions," said department secretary Martin Persson.

One of the proposed changes stipulates that support will only be given to local publications with a circulation of up to 40,000 copies.

According to Medievärlden, this would mean a loss of income worth 5.5 million kronor ($763,000) for both Svenska Dagbladet and Skånska Dagbladet.
