Police find 78 strawberry pickers in truck trailer

Acting on a tip-off, police on Tuesday requested a truck driver to pull over on the motorway just outside Kalmar in south-eastern Sweden.
On opening the doors they found that the trailer was loaded with no fewer than 78 Polish strawberry pickers.
According to police, the fruit pickers were in the middle of a dangerous journey of around 20 kilometres between two strawberry fields.
The truck driver may now face criminal charges for gross negligence. The strawberry farmer who ordered the freight of human cargo is also under suspicion.
Police received the tip after a confused member of the public noticed some people peering out through a gap in the trailer door.
