Journalists receive death threats

Two journalists at northern Swedish newspaper Östersunds-Posten (ÖP) have received a number of anonymous death threats.

Many of the threatening messages sent to the newspapers offices have been of a xenophobic and racist nature and the newspaper has reported the matter to the police.

One of the journalists in particular claims to have been receiving letters, e-mails and phone calls of this type for a number of years.

"They are anonymous comments that suggest they know personal things about me," he said.

The latest threat was so strongly worded that it has prompted the newspaper to highlight the problem for its readers.

"If you don't just die soon, I am going to come find you and shove an angle grinder down your anti-Swedish, politically correct throat. A day will come when you will be rewarded with a shot in the neck."

Staff at the newspaper pledged their support for their colleagues in a lengthy article in Wednesday's edition of the newspaper.

"Nobody can scare ÖP into silence. If you threaten one employee at ÖP, you also threaten everybody else and everything we do. That is why it is important for us to unite in our defence of freedom of speech," said newspaper editor Bosse Andersson.
