Barbecue ban in Stockholm as hot weather hits

Barbecues and outdoor fires have been banned by fire authorities in Stockholm due to dry conditions across the county. The ban applies to any fires or barbecues on public land; fires and grills are still permitted on private property.

The ban was issued on Thursday by Stockholm County fire officials.

"During a total fire ban barbecuing is only allowed on private property," said Peter Eriksson of Södertörn Fire Brigade in a press release.

Forests and ground in the region are currently very dry, both in Stockholm and the wider region. There has been little rainfall in recent weeks, and sunny weather with temperatures in the twenties celsius is forecast to continue over the weekend.

According to the Swedish Rescue Services Agency (Räddningsverket) and meteorological office SMHI, the areas with the greatest risk for forest fires are in southern and eastern Sweden.

Localities judged to be at particular risk include parts of Gotland, south-eastern Götaland and eastern Norrland. Grass fires are most likely in the northernmost and westernmost parts of Norrland.

In Kronoberg County in southern Sweden the County Administrative Board has also issued a general fire ban. The ban applied from midday on Thursday until further notice. The risk of fire in the county is high to very high, officials say.

With more dry, hot weather expected, the ban in Kronoberg is likley to remain in place for some time. Barbecues are allowed on designated campsite barbecues and other approved sites.
