Arlanda jumbo jet targeted for youth hostel

A Boeing 747 which has been parked at Stockholm's Arlanda airport since 2002 could be converted into a youth hostel. The plane was grounded when airline Transjet went bankrupt and now an Uppsala company wants to give it a new lease of life.

"Nobody in the world has done this. Arlanda needs rooms and this is a good alternative for many travellers," said Oscar Dios to newspaper Upsala Nya Tidning.

Dios knows his budget accommodation, being the man behind the Uppsala youth hostel City. The plans to start a new hostel in the abandoned jumbo jet are already well-advanced, he says.

Sigtuna council has received a planning application but has not yet dealt with the case. And Dios is still waiting for a decision on the hostel from Arlanda's management.

"It's a rather unusual project. It's still in the preparation stage and we're looking at issues of how it will work and and the environmental aspects," said Fredrik Johansson, in the property department at airports authority Luftfartsverket.
