Swedish woman arrested for Australia murder plot
A 22-year-old Swedish woman has been arrested in Australia, charged with conspiring to murder two prosecution witnesses.
Charlotte Lindström was arrested in Sydney in one of a string of raids by anti-gang police in New South Wales and Victoria over the weekend.
Lindström was named in documents from Sydney Central Local Court as a 'principal' in the plan to murder the two men, according to the Sydney Morning Post. Police say that she conspired with Australian Dennis Basic to arrange the killing of the men. She allegedly approached an undercover police officer to solicit the murders.
The Swede has lived in Australia for two years, and is currently in the process of applying for permanent residency. Described as a 'Sydney socialite' by Australian media, she has been charged with two counts of conspiracy to murder and two counts of soliciting to murder. She was also charged with the possession of 0.3 grams of cocaine.
Lindström, who did not apply for bail, was remanded in custody in a hearing in Sydney on Tuesday. She did not attend the hearing and did not apply for bail, according to the Herald Sun newspaper. A bail hearing is due to be held on May 31st.
A spokeswoman for the Swedish foreign ministry confirmed to The Local that a Swedish woman in her early twenties was arrested on May 26th for soliciting murder.
"We do not have any details about the circumstances. The embassy is trying to establish contact with the woman to ensure that she has legal representation," the spokeswoman said.
