Rail traffic faces major delays

Major delays to rail traffic are expected all this weekend on the main line between Stockholm and Gothenburg after a train derailed near the western town of Alingsås on Friday evening.

Normal service is not set to resume until some time next week.

Two containers came loose on a goods train south of Alingsås at 5pm on Friday. The train derailed after one of the containers fell off and the other was left hanging over over the edge of the train.

Both tracks on the main line were completely blocked during rush hour on the first day of an SAS airline strike, which had caused man flight passengers to switch to rail transport.

Replacement buses were called in but there were serious delays for passengers on Friday evening. One of the tracks was reopened on Saturday morning, though with the speed limit reduced.

"It looks like traffic will be able to move all day with delays. It will remain like this all weekend and some of next week," said rail authority spokesman TomasBoström.
