Germany tightens border controls

For the next two weeks anybody travelling from Sweden to Germany must be prepared to show a passport or Swedish national ID card when crossing into German territory.

Border checks are to be tightened from May 25th to June 9th in connection with a G8 summit meeting at Heiligendamm, a Baltic resort near Rostock.

Security in the country has been stepped up as representatives for the world's eight richest countries prepare to meet at the resort from June 6th to 8th.

Passport controls at the german border are generally non-existent, according to a statement from the Swedish police. But there are exceptions, such as now, when German police consider there to be a much higher threat than usual to national security.
