Wage gap narrows between the sexes

The wage gap between men and women in Sweden is getting smaller, according to new statistics. Women's wages rose faster than men's in all sectors apart from local government, the figures from Statistics Sweden show.

Women working for central government closed the gap most, with their wages increasing 2 percentage points more than men's wages.

In local government, where women and men's wages rose at about the same rate, the overall wage levels were roughly equal between the sexes. When other factors such as job, education and age are taken into account, women earned 99 percent of men's average wages.

The largest wage gap was among office workers in the private sector, in which women earned 90 percent of men's wages, when other factors were taken into account.
