Naprapathy was founded in the United States in the early 20th century, and consists of techniques for manipulating connective tissues. The practices involved differ from chiropractic techniques, and the discipline also involves additional elements such as nutritional counselling.

The new study, by researcher Eva Skillgate at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, followed 409 patients with back problems, some of whom underwent traditional treatment methods, others of whom were treated by a naprapath.

An evaluation after three months showed that 57 percent of patients who had been to a naprapath felt that their condition was significantly improved. Only 13 percent of the control group said they felt a significant improvement. 69 percent of naprapath patients through they had received effective pain relief, compared with 42 percent in the other group, according to Svenska Dagbladet.

The study is published in the Clinical Journal of Pain.
