The measures, which have been proposed by the Swedish National Road Administration (Vägverket), are intended to reduce the number of suicides from the current level of 40-50 per year.

The administration said it wants those bridges most commonly used for suicide attempts to be secured by 31st December next year.

As well as physical barriers such as higher fences, measures could include telephones connected to counsellors or the emergency services.
