UN calls for Swedish troops in Darfur

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has called for Sweden to become involved in a future UN peacekeeping force in Darfur. Sweden's Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt met the UN chief in New York on Monday.

"He wants to see a Swedish involvement, and there are currently discussions underway about whether we should join Norway to create a unit," saidReinfeldt after the meeting.

The Prime Minister told Ban Ki-Moon that Sweden would be prepared to join in the peace effort under the right circumstances.

"We can't give the go-ahead until we know what the force looks like, what security will be like and what the leadership will be.

"His message was that it is important for Europe to realize that it will probably be under African command," said Reinfeldt.
