Police missed dead body in Stockholm suburb

A body found on Wednesday in the Stockholm suburb of Alby may have been lying there for 14 days. Police first received a tip-off two weeks ago but were unable to locate the body.

The male body found in a black suitcase was not dismembered as police had initially thought, but it was severely lacerated.

"We thought it had been [dismembered] at first but that turned out not to be the case. A body can be lacerated without being dismembered," said police spokesman Mats Nyhlén.

Chief investigator Stefan Bergqvist was able to confirm that police had failed to find the body two weeks earlier.

"It is correct that police searched there a couple of weeks ago but didn't find anything. Maybe the tip-off did not give the right location," he said.

A preliminary forensic examination has shown that the body was that of a man between the ages of 20 and 40. An autopsy on Thursday afternoon is expected to provide further information.

The corpse was found wrapped in a blue plastic Ikea bag inside a black suitcase. A member of the public called police after making the macabre find.

The body was found in a wooded area that was difficult to access. Police immediately cordoned off the area to allow an examination by forensics experts.

Police reported that they had made a number of interesting finds at the scene but would not reveal the nature of their discoveries.
