Police investigate possible honour killing in Karlstad

Police in western Sweden suspect that a 16-year-old girl found dead outside a house in Karlstad two months ago may have been the victim of an honour killing.

Five police investigators from the National Criminal Investigation Department (Rikskriminalen) have spent the last three weeks in the town looking into the girl's death.

She was found by a newspaper delivery man in front of the entrance to the house where she lived having fallen from the fourth floor.

Police soon began to suspect that she may have been removed by force from the gallery two floors above the family's apartment.

Newspaper Nya Wermlands-Tidningen spoke to one of the investigators, a specialist in honour killings.

"it's important to understand the thinking. We don't think like that in Sweden. But something that looks like a suicide may in fact be coercion and pressure from the family, or even from an entire clan," he said.

The family of the 16-year-old girl has been questioned a number of times about her death. The murder investigation is still ongoing.
