Roma discrimination case settled out of court
The former owner of a campsite in southern Sweden has agreed to pay a group of Roma travellers 200,000 kronor ($29,000) in an out-of-court settlement.
The case was due to come before Malmö District Court on Tuesday morning but proceedings were interrupted almost immediately to allow the parties to discuss the possibility of reaching a settlement.
Sweden's Ombudsman against Ethnic Discrimination (Diskrimineringsombudsman - DO) decided to sue the former owner of Sibbarp campsite in Limhamn after a group of 27 Roma and their seven caravans were refused entry to the site in 2004.
A woman from the group had called the campsite in advance to confirm that there were vacancies. When they arrived however the owner informed them that the site was fully booked.
The group claimed that several other caravans were allowed entry to the site at the same time as they were refused. And according to a statement by DO, "July 2004 was a rainy summer, which meant that the campsite had vacancies".
DO had called for the group to be paid a total of 675,000 kronor in compensation, or 15,000 kronor per person.
The former owner of the campsite has denied discriminating against the group.
