Momentum builds behind Björklund

Momentum is building behind Schools Minister Jan Björklund as the favourite to succeed Lars Leijonborg as leader of Sweden's Liberal Party, with several party districts coming out in his favour.

He was officially nominated on Monday by Liberals in Bohuslän county. The Skåne party district, the second largest in Sweden, has also declared for Björklund. On Tuesday Liberals in Malmö sent in their nomination of Björklund as the new leader.

They also nominated Europe Minister Cecilia Malmström as deputy leader and Allan Widman, a member of parliament from Skåne, as the second deputy leader.

"Jan Björklund is a leader who listens and is a very good communicator. He dares to speak plainly and he represents a political direction which we support. It is therefore with pleasure that we nominate him to be the new leader of the Liberal Party," said Ewa Bertz, deputy chairman of Malmö Liberals, in a written statement on Tuesday.

The Liberal Party is one of four parties in the ruling centre-right Alliance for Sweden.
