Malmö nightclub found guilty of discrimination
Malmö nightclub Escape has been found guilty of discriminating against four people on ethnic grounds.
The four people in question were law students with a foreign background. On a Friday evening in 2004, they filmed the bouncer on duty at the nightclub with a hidden camera.
When they attempted to gain entry, however, the bouncer demanded to see their VIP cards. No such demands were made on a group of Swedish students standing in line at the same time.
The Court of Appeal saw no reason to change the initial verdict of the District Court, which ruled that the students should each be awarded 15,000 kronor in compensation.
Sweden's Ombudsman against Ethnic Discrimination (Diskrimineringsombudsman - DO) had called for a considerably larger compensation payment of 150,000 kronor per person.
Escape has also been ordered to pay 45,000 kronor to cover three quarters of DO's appeals court costs.
