Social Democrats extend poll lead

Sweden's centre-right government would be roundly defeated if there was a general election now, according to a new poll from the Sifo institute.

According to Sifo's poll, the Social Democrats are bigger alone than all the parties of the ruling Alliance together.

Of the 1,892 people interviewed by Sifo, 44.1 percent said they would vote for the Social Democrats, compared with 41.4 percent which would vote for one of the Alliance parties. Together with the Left and Green parties, the Social Democrats have a lead of 12.4 percentage points.

The poll is good news for the new Social Democrat leader, Mona Sahlin. Since she was elected, voter support for the Social Democrats has risen 4.8 percent, according to Svenska Dagbladet.

The Left Party was down at 4.3 percent - dangerously close to the 4 percent threshold needed to gain seats in parliament.

The rise for the Social Democrats and the fall for the Left Party were both statistically significant.

The poll was conducted between 2nd and 12th April. Respondents were asked which party they would vote for if a general election were held today.
