Fortum to appeal

Electricity supplier Fortum is to appeal a ruling ordering it to pay back 250 million kronor ($36 million) to customers it is accused of overcharging.

The Energy Market Inspectorate found on Tuesday that Fortum had charged over half a million customers too much for their electricity in 2003. The customers were centred in the Stockholm and western Sweden districts.

"Fortum will appeal the decision to the district court, as the inspectorate has used a theoretical network model that does not correspond to the actual situation," the company wrote in a press release.

A further 13 companies previously found to have overcharged have also appealed. Customers will not receive any compensation until the legal process is exhausted.
