The four people earlier reported missing in Arjeplog have now been found and are reported to be in good health. There have been indications that they rode out the storm from the shelter of a cottage.

The group, consisting of two men and two men all aged around 60, had been missing since 5pm on Wednesday.

Four mountain rescue workers were sent out to look for the group along the area's nature trails.

Weather conditions were too severe to permit the use of helicopters in the search.

"It is terrible weather. Everybody should stay indoors and nobody should head up into the mountains at the moment," said police spokesman John Forsberg.

A number of roads in Norrland have been closed after storm force winds swept in over the region on Thursday morning.

Meteorological agency SMHI issued a warning for extreme weather conditions, particularly in mountainous areas near the Norwegian border.

There is a major risk of avalanches in the most northerly mountain ranges.

The storm left twelve thousand households without electricity.
