'Origin labels' to identify Swedish fish

From the beginning of next year, Swedish consumers will be able to see who caught the fish they are eating, along with when and where it was caught. The idea of 'origin-labelling' of Swedish fish was proposed by the Swedish Fishermen’s Federation (Sveriges Fiskares Riksförbund, SFR).
The move comes against a backdrop of increasing illegal fishing and fiddling of catch numbers, reports Svenska Dagbladet.
"It's a voluntary arrangement but the goal is for as many fisheries as possible to use the labelling," said project leader Anders Carlberg of the SFR in Västra Götaland.
The labelling of the fish will be certified and checked by the company Aranea, part of the Krav group which oversees organic food standards labelling in Sweden.
Most of Sweden's fishing industry operates off the country's west coast. According to SFR, almost 3,000 professional fishermen catch around 330,000 tonnes of fish and shellfish annually, with a market value of over 1 billion kronor.
