Ticking package taken from bank

Swedish bomb squad technicians were called to a bank in Gnesta , south of Stockholm, on Tuesday after a robber left a ticking package on the counter.

A man placed the parcel on the bank's counter at lunchtime on Tuesday along with a note demanding money. Bank staff handed over an undisclosed amount of money, according to Södermanland Police.

The bank was evacuated directly after the raid, and shocked bank staff gathered in a nearby café. Police sealed off the square outside the bank.

Police technicians removed the package using robots, and were still examining it on Tuesday evening.

"We cannot say whether or not it is a bomb until technicians have taken it apart, and that will happen tonight or tomorrow morning at the earliest," said police spokesman Lars Franzell.

The robber has so far not been caught. Police interviewed witnesses on Tuesday afternoon, and are searching their registers for potential suspects.

It is so far unclear how the robber took himself to the bank and made his getaway. The last witnesses saw of him was as he walked out the bank.

"If the security cameras were working there should be an image of the man," said Franzell.
