Swedes prepare to accelerate

The top speed limit on Swedish roads is set to increase to 120 km/h. On Thursday the government decided to present a bill to the Riksdag which would increase the number of limits to include speeds of 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 km/h.

"The Swedish Road Administration estimates that this will eventually save 40-50 lives per year," said infrastructure minister Åsa Torstensson in a statement.

Former infrastructure minister Ulrica Messing had been opposed to the move, which was initially proposed by the Road Administration in 2005.

"The current system is stiff and outdated and does not fit in with the way we view things today," said road safety officer Claes Tingvall in January.

The new speed limits will lead to the application of a more adaptable model, whereby speed limits will be set in direct relation to conditions on a specific road. For example, roads with a 90 km/h speed limit may see a reduction to 80 km/h during the winter.

The maximum speed limit of 120 km/h will only apply to the safest stretches of motorway.
