Abortion waits 'too long' in Sweden

Swedish women are being forced to wait too long for abortions, according to a new report which suggests allowing them to return home to complete medical abortions.
The report, by the National Board of Health and Welfare, says that waiting times for abortions are too long, despite the fact that abortions are classed as emergency treatment.
The board also found that waiting times and treatment methods varied significantly between counties and different health centres. The waiting time for a first doctors' visit varies between 2.5 and 10 days.
The waiting time for a medical abortion can be anything between four and fourteen days, with waits for surgical abortions lasting up to 19 days.
A total of 34,000 abortions before week 12 of pregnancy were carried out in Sweden between July 2005 and June 2006.
