German controversy over Swedish childcare

Swedish nursery schools are psychologically damaging for children and turn women into "baby machines," German television viewers have heard.

The claims were made by a sociologist and a Catholic bishop during a televised debate on family policy, Metro reports.

"One in three Swedish children is psychologically damaged due to spending time in daycare," said Catholic sociologist Gabrielle Kuby, according to the paper.

The debate was prompted by a proposal from the German family minister, Ursula von der Leyen, to triple the number of nursery school places from 250,000 to 750,000.

The Swedish National Agency for Education denied that one in three children who attend daycare is psychologically damaged.

"In fact, there are studies that show that children who go to nursery school do better than others, both socially and at school," said education adviser Ulla Nordenstam to Metro.
