Man asked strangers to castrate him

A man is to appear in court next week charged with phoning women to ask them to castrate him.

The man, from Sala, central Sweden, initially wrote to women in nearby Västerås, saying that he was a sex offender and wanted to be castrated. He said he wanted to arrange meetings with them so that they could castrate him, newspaper Vestmanlands Läns Tidning reports.

The man did not know the women, but had found their numbers in a phone directory.

When the women did not respond, the man started to ring women in Västerås, saying he was carrying out research on paedophiles and rapists. After a while, he would bring up the subject of castration.

He would then go on to suggest that the women meet him in Sala shopping centre, where they would recognize him because he would be wearing a tulip in his buttonhole.

"Many of the women have been distressed and afraid that he would come after them," police inspector Johnny Bäckman told paper Sala Allehanda, which did not specify what crime the man is charged with.

The man has admitted writing the letters and making the phone calls. He will appear in court in Sala next week.
