Swedish emissions 'no lower than in 1990'

Sweden's emissions of greenhouse gases have not fallen since 1990, three eminent researchers have said, contradicting claims by the former government that they have.

The Swedish environment department claimed in a press release in December 2005 that emissions in 2005 were lower than those in 2004, and seven percent lower than those in 1990. The figures were based on calculations by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

But professors Christian Berggren, Staffan Jacobsson and Staffan Laestadius argue in Dagens Nyheter that emissions from planes and ships to and from Sweden ought to count towards the total. If this was counted, emissions for 2005 would be the same as those for 1990.

"In other words, the whole of the claimed reduction is eradicated," they say.
