Sony Ericsson to make phones in India
Swedish-Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson has announced that it is planning to start manufacturing in India.
The plan was announced by company president Miles Flint at a press conference in the city of Chennai on Wednesday. Sony Ericsson has signed deals with contract manufacturers Flextronics and Foxconn to achieve a capacity of 10 million mobiles by 2009.
The phones will be made in the city of Chennai, starting in May. Flextronics and Foxconn already own factories in the city, but they will need to build extra facilities to meet Sony Ericsson's demands.
The Indian factories will initially produce Sony Ericsson's more basic colour-screen models as well as phones with music players.
The phones will be adapted for the Indian market, the company wrote in a press release.
Sony Ericsson has been present on the Indian market since 2002 and is one of the three largest GSM phone makers in the country.
