Benefits office sheds 1,400 jobs

The Swedish Social Insurance Administration, Försäkringskassan, has announced that it is to shed around 1,400 staff in 2007.

Around half of the jobs set to disappear will go through involuntary redundancy, the others will be voluntary redundancies and retirements, the organization said in a statement.

"This is necessary and natural development for Försäkringskassan," said director general Curt Malmborg.

"We shall become an effective public authority, which responds well to citizens' needs and demands. This is about giving good service and making correct and rapid decisions," he said.

Försäkringskassan is responsible for the administration of state payments to people who are not working due to illness or parental leave.
