Former Speaker quits the Moderates

Political veteran Ingegerd Troedsson has quit the Moderates, saying that she no longer recognises herself in the party and that she is unhappy with its taxation policies.

Troedsson emphasised that there was nothing dramatic about her decision.

"I left the party quietly by not paying the membership fee," she said to TT.

Troedsson explained that the decision was primarily based on the party's tax policies, an area she worked with during the decades in which she was a member of the Moderates' inner circle.

"I think it's extremely important that tax is based on ability to pay and that the policies are consistent. I don't think the party has addressed that area enough," she said.

The former minister said that she believes taxes in Sweden are far too high.

"Especially for those on low incomes and with high maintenance costs. They are so high that many become dependent upon benefits completely unnecessarily," she said.

Troedsson revealed to Upsala Nya Tidning that she no longer felt like a Moderate, and that for the first time in September she voted for different parties in the election. But she would not say which parties earned her vote.

"I am generally conservative and I think that together the four parties' policy is good: to make people more independent," she said.

Ingegerd Troedsson became a member of the then right party at the beginning of the 1950s. In the 1970s she was a close confidante of the Moderates' leader Gösta Bohman and she became a minister in 1976 in Sweden's first conservative government of modern times.

Her career peaked in 1991 when she was appointed Speaker of Parliament.
