700 million kronor drugs bust in Gothenburg

Swedish and Polish police have broken up a vast network that brought illegal drugs from Venezuela to Europe, arresting three people and seizing 1,360 kilos of cocaine, police in Warsaw said on Tuesday.

"The joint anti-drug operation has led to the arrest of the leaders of the trafficking to European countries and to the breaking-up of this network," Polish police spokesman Zbigniew Matwiej told AFP.

He said the value of the seized drugs, "supplied directly by the Colombian cartels", is estimated at over 700 million kronor.

"Swedish police discovered 1,360 kilos of cocaine hidden in containers in the port of Gothenburg," Sweden, a police statement said. Polish police determined that the drugs had been destined for Poland.

Swedish police replaced the drugs with a harmless substitute and let the cargo leave for Poland under surveillance.

Cooperation between the two police forces led to the arrest of three people in the northwestern Polish city of Szczecin "just before Christmas."

"They were charged with belonging to an organised crime group and with drug trafficking," Matwiej said.

The three arrested suspects are two Polish nationals and one Mexican, according to Malgorzata Wojciechowicz, a spokeswoman for the prosecutors' office in Szczecin.

Matwiej said more arrests would follow.
