Man jumps into lake to rescue female driver

A 23-year-old female motorist found herself in a perilous situation on Christmas Eve when she drove her car off the road and into a lake. Fortunately the man driving behind her stopped his car, jumped into the water, and pulled her out of her vehicle.

Mikael Andersson, 35, was driving home to Avesta in central Sweden with his partner and their two children. At 4.30 p.m. he saw a car swerve off the road and into a bridge railing.

He pulled over and dialled 112 for emergency services before stopping another car.

"Then I jumped into the water because I heard the girl crying 'help me'," said Andersson.

The woman's car had landed on its roof in Lake Silvköparen and quickly began to fill up with water. But Andersson's swift reaction helped to avert the danger.

"He jumped into the water and managed to open a back door. It was a heroic intervention on his part," said fire chief Jan Lindberg.

The 23-year-old woman was not physically injured in the accident. She was however taken to hospital to be treated for shock but was able to leave again later in the evening.

"It felt good to be able to save someone. It was good that it coincided with Christmas Eve too," said Andersson.
