Organ donation increases in Sweden

The number of organs being donated by Swedes for transplant has increased in the last 12 months. So far in 2006 organs have been taken from 136 recently deceased people.
That is the highest number since 1991, reported Dagens Nyheter.
For a few years around 2000 the number of donors stabilised around 100. But after an active information campaign, more people have been signing up to offer their organs.
There are still considerable differences in numbers around the country, however.
Many of Sweden's 71 hospitals with intensive care wards - and especially those in the north of the country - lack doctors and nurses with specific responsibility for organ donation.
In the last year, there have been twice as many organ donors in Uppsala compared to Stockholm.
