Local authorities in Gothenburg have claimed that blockaded salad bar Wild'n Fresh does not have a licence to serve food. Owner Sofia Appelgren says that she went through all the proper application procedures and was expecting written confirmation from the environmental health authorities.

"Now I'm going to sell up. I no longer have any desire to run a company, not in this country," Appelgren told Dagens Nyheter.

The Hotel and Restaurant Union initially got in touch with the local Environment and Health Authority in an attempt to find out more about Appelgren's business. There it emerged that the owner did not have a valid licence to handle and sell foodstuffs.

"I am going to go over there to recommend the owner to shut down," Daniel Eek from the city's Environment and Health authority, told Metro.

Speaking to newspaper Dagens Nyheter, Sofia Appelgrean explained that she received a visit from a health inspector in February of this year. She was subsequently issued with a provisional licence, which was to be upgraded when she had carried out some minor changes.

"We applied for a licence, made all the changes asked of us, and I sent in a whole sheaf of paper.

"I was given permission to carry on the business while waiting for the written licence to arrive," said Appelgren.

Appelgren maintains that she never would have dared to operate without a licence and is now considering getting rid of her business.

The Hotel and Restaurant Union meanwhile plans to widen its blockade today. It has called on four other trade unions to stage a sympathy strike.

The organisations in question are the Municipal Workers’ Union, the Transport Workers' Union, the Food Workers' Union, and the Union of Commercial Workers.

"We're just going according to the book as regards the handling of this type of conflict," said restaurant union ombudsman Dag Fransson.
