According to Thomas Fuxborg at Gothenburg police, there were around 20 people in each of the two gangs.

One man in his 20s was stabbed by Götaplatsen and a further two people were taken to hospital after being beaten to the ground on Avenyn. One of them escaped to a burger restaurant and the other made it into a café.

Thomas Fuxborg said that the two groups clashed when the right wing extremists were handing out flyers which urged people to attend the so-called Salem march near Stockholm next Saturday.

The march is an annual event held in the memory of a 17 year old boy who was beaten up and stabbed to death in Salem in 2000. The attackers had immigrant backgrounds.

The skirmish in Gothenburg on Saturday developed into a full street brawl which drifted back and forth between Heden, Götaplatsen and Avenyn.

"They were throwing bottles at each other and forced their way into a café. It was a nightmare in town for 10 to 15 minutes," said Fuxborg to TT.

Two people were taken into police custody for causing a public disturbance. 14 people were removed by police from Avenyn and taken in buses to other parts of the city.

Three of those involved were taken in for questioning.
