Russians accused over record ecstasy haul
Two men were remanded in custody in Malmö on Sunday suspected of attempting to smuggle in the largest consignment of ecstasy ever uncovered in Sweden.
The men, aged 47 and 48, are Russian citizens and entered Sweden in separate cars on the ferry to Trelleborg on Thursday. Customs officers searched the cars, and found the drugs in a specially adapted compartment in the vehicles' petrol tanks.
Prosecutors say that a total of 50 kilos of ecstasy pills was discovered, which would have a street value of between 10 and 20 million kronor. The cache contained approximately 150,000-200,000 pills. The men could face a maximum prison sentence of ten years if they are convicted.
Appearing in court for a remand hearing in Malmö on Sunday, both men denied the charges of drug smuggling, and said that they had been ordered to drive the cars from Germany to St Petersburg.
"The usual old story," said prosecutor Ronny Jonsson.
The remand hearing had been due to take place on Saturday in Lund, but was moved to a secure courtroom in Malmö.
