Heavy rain overnight caused accidents and flooding in Gothenburg and other parts of western Sweden on Saturday morning.

A number of underpasses were still flooded at lunchtime, and there were reports of cars being abandoned.

The Klareberg underpass under the E6 at Hisingen and the Ånäs underpass had so much water in them that cars could not get past.

"We're working flat out to try to get rid of the water," said Lotta Stålhandske at the Swedish National Road Administration in Gothenburg.

Emergency service call centres were overwhelmed during the morning, mainly due to people reporting flooded cellars.

"There are large amounts of water in some places," said police spokesman Jan Strannegård.

A car crashed into a wall in the Örgryte underpass on the E6 after water planing. Nobody was injured.

Passengers also escaped essentially unharmed in an accident involving two cars on the same motorway, outside Varberg. One car hit the other after staring to water plane. Both cars ended up in the ditch next to the motorway.
