Southern Sweden braced for winter
Norrland has already seen plenty of snow but now the rest of the country can also start getting out its shovels and skis. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) predicts that the first snow of the season could hit Stockholm and most of southern Sweden by tonight.
"As the cold weather moves down across the country on Tuesday night rain will turn to snow all the way down to Skåne," according to meteorologist André Franke.
With the wind gathering strength SMHI has issued a Class 3 warning for Värmland and Dalarna. This is the highest warning level, entailing a risk of very extreme weather conditions and major disruptions to important public services.
Other parts of the country have received Class 2 warnings. These are Örebro, Västmanland, Gävleborg and Dalafjällen.
"There could be up to half a metre of snow in northern Värmland and Dalarna. Northern Svealand and southern Norrland can expect 20 to 30 centimetres of snow with a risk for slippery conditions and snowdrifts,” according to meteorologist Anders Tallsjö.
"There are likely to be power cuts in many areas due to falling branches," Tallsjö continued.
Snow storms have already left over 5,000 Fortum customers without electricity.
SMHI has warned that, as the temperature drops, areas where there has been rain can expect a change to icy conditions.
The meteorological service also warns of rising water levels in many rivers in southern Sweden as a result of heavy rainfall.
