Bus drivers banned from taking cash

Swedish transport authorities on Friday announced they would no longer allow cash payments on any buses in the Stockholm area from January to reduce attacks on bus drivers.

"From January 1, 2007 the Swedish Work Environment Authority (AV) prohibits bus operators Connex, Swebus and Busslink from allowing drivers ... regardless of the time of day, from handling cash in all buses on public transport services in the Stockholm region," the authority said in a statement.

Any infringement would be punished with a fine of one million Swedish kronor, it added.

The decision to implement the ban was taken due to the rising number of assaults on bus drivers in the Stockholm region over the past two years.

Cashless buses would significantly reduce the risk of drivers being attacked, AV said.
