Fight clubs spread across Sweden

Real life fight clubs, where participants pummel each other into submission, are now beginning to spread around the country. Police are now preparing for the first incarnation in Gothenburg on November 11, according to Dagens Nyheter.

Two weeks ago The Local reported on Stockholmers beating the living daylights out of each other in a bare-knuckle boxing club located on a dockside fishing boat in the city centre.

Unless someone actually dies as a result of these consensual fights, police are puzzled as to how to approach the issue. They cannot for example prosecute a participant for assault if the victim has agreed to expose himself to the dangers.

"If this should lead to someone being beaten to death then it is manslaughter. One cannot consent to being beaten to death. The perpetrator will always be prosecuted in such a case," police spokesman Mats Glansberg told Dagens Nyheter.

The police's own legal unit is currently looking into how to tackle the problem. The results of the internal investigation are expected next week.
