Three Swedes die in air crash
Three Swedes died when their light aircraft crashed into the sea off the coast of southern Sweden on Monday evening.
All three men were members of the same flying club in Borås.
During the night boats, planes and helicopters searched for survivors in the accident area 35 kilometres south of Trelleborg. Just before 1.30am the search was called off.
"We have thoroughly searched the scene of the accident and have salvaged a lot of small bits of wreckage. There is no hope of finding any survivors," said Maria Boman at the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre early on Tuesday morning.
By then, the rescue boats had returned to Trelleborg harbour and handed over the wreckage to the police. The matter will now be handled by the Swedish Accident Investigation Commission.
The alarm was raised about the accident at around 9.15 on Monday evening. The men had just acquired the plane, a brand new DA 40, and were on their way from Austria to Borås. They had made a stop in Germany.
Because there was bad weather in the Borås area the pilot instead chose to fly to Sturup. They were given clearance and had begun to descend. But suddenly the plane plummeted on the radar before disappearing.
No cause of the accident has yet been suggested.
