Outdoor wireless networks in 20 Swedish towns
Internet provider Glocalnet is to launch an outdoor wireless Internet network in the 20 largest towns in Sweden starting in March 2007.
Glocalnet, which is owned by Telenor, intends to make the service available free of charge for its customers. For those who are not already Glocalnet subscribers prices for the service, known as Glocalzone, range from 19 kronor per hour to 59 kronor for a full week.
After a successful trial period this summer in Linköping, Norrköping and Nyköping, Glocalnet is now ready to widen its net.
"With Glocalzone you can sit at a café, on a square or in the park and surf the internet. Previously this was too expensive for private persons. We want everyone to be able to afford a wireless connection," said Glocalnet's CEO Martin Tiveus in a press release.
Glocalnet compares its Glocalzone service with Telia's Homerun, which costs 60 kronor per hour.
Glocalzone is an encrypted wireless network with a speed of up to 1 Mbit per second.
Existing Glocalnet customers can use their standard login details to access the network. Others can pay for the service with a credit card, over the telephone or via SMS.
While it will take six months for the network to be completed the service is already in operation in a number of large towns.
