Police in Stockholm have uncovered a major prostitution ring, in which around 20 eastern European women were involved. Seven people have been arrested on suspicion of pimping.

The gang are believed to have run the brothels in hotels and apartments in the capital, according to SVT's Rapport programme.

Police raided around 10 properties in the Stockholm area on Wednesday, although they have so far not revealed what they discovered, although both the prostituted women and a large number of customers have been identified.

The prostitution ring appears to have been in operation for a long time. Police say further arrests can be expected over and above the two women and five men already detained. The seven are suspected of pimping, serious drug crimes, weapons offences and theft.

The gang is accused, among other things, of stealing goods worth hundreds of thousands of kronor from tax-free stores at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and at Gardermoen in Oslo.

Stockholm police say they have never come across another criminal gang with such a prolific criminal enterprise. Commissioner Greger Casselborg said the gang had affiliates in other countries.

"This is an international organization, and they're not just involved in one type of crime," he said.
