Girl and man die in tractor accident
A man and a five-year old girl died after they became trapped under a tractor that turned over on a farm in Dalsland, central Sweden, on Tuesday morning.
Emergency services were informed about the accident, which happened on the farm just outside Dals-Ed, at 12:40 pm.
"We aren't quite sure what happened in the accident, but it happened on a farm track," police spokesman Thomas Fuxborg said. A priest and a police patrol had been sent to inform relatives of those killed.
Four children have been killed in agricultural accidents in Sweden this year, emphasizing the dangers inherent in modern mechanized farming.
"The biggest risk is that children get trapped behind a big machine," said Anders Danielsson at farmers organization LRF. Farms are homes, workplaces and playgrounds at the same time, which causes problems, he said.
"This means that in contrast to most other professions children are involved straight away in the daily operations," he said. LRF has been runnin a project for several years to raise awareness of the dangers for children in the farming industry.
