Persson predicts Alliance split

Sweden's new Alliance government will split within four years. That's the analysis of defeated prime minister Göran Persson, who addressed Social Democrat members of parliament on Tuesday.

"Given how badly prepared the Alliance seems to be, a new Social Democratic party leadership ought to be prepared to take office before 2010," he told the meeting of MPs in Stockholm.

"I wouldn't bet money on this coalition - they've got a small majority, there are four parties, of which two have lost a lot of votes in the election," he said.

Persson, who was dumped by voters last week after ten years at the top, also said the four parties were "unknowledgeable" about how to construct a budget, Dagens Nyheter reported.
