“Still nobody is in custody,” said Christer Johannsson, police spokesman to Dagens Nyheter on Thursday morning. “We are now discussing how to continue.”

The wanted man is known to police and is a resident of the area in which the alleged crimes took place, the suburb of Sidsjön. The neighborhood is now under surveillance.

“This is about a nasty case of attempted rape,” said Hans Häggström, police spokesman. “The suspect has beaten and fought with the women. In the first case it was close to being a complete rape.”

The first attempted rape happened around 8 p.m. A young woman came into the police station and reported the case. She was saved by others who heard her call for help. The suspect fled the scene.

Some 30 minutes later two other women reported attempted rapes. Others called in with tips.

Two women who were molested but were not victims of attempted rape also called police. One of these women reported the abuse taking place in central Sundsvall, leading police to believe the perpetrator began in town around 7 p.m. and then worked his way home.

Police combed the area last night where the suspect is thought to reside, but as of 8 a.m. Thursday, he was still on the loose.

“It is just a matter of time before we have him,” said Häggström.
