A corpse has been found in a ventilation shaft at a closed-down hospice in northern Sweden.

Neighbours of the hospice in the small town of Backe, forty kilometres east of Strömsund, had noticed a strange smell for the past three months. The empty building had been searched several times without discovering the source of the stench, according to local newspaper Tidningen Ångermanland.

The body was found when workers opened up a shaft on Monday. Police technicians are expected to examine the corpse later on Tuesday.

"We haven't got the body out yet," said Frank Nilsson from Östersund police.

Nilsson refused to speculate about how the body had ended up in the ventilation system, but said it was not necessarily down to foul play.
